Identity theft protection is one of the most reviewed — and most confusing — categories in consumer security. Every service promises to watch your identity, but they differ enormously in what they actually monitor, how much insurance backs you up, and what the plan really costs after the promo pricing expires.

This ranking is research-based: we aggregated 2026 rankings and reviews from CNET, Security.org, TechRadar, Tom's Guide, PCMag, CyberInsider, Money.com, and Gizmodo, then compared current pricing, monitoring depth, insurance limits, and bundled extras ourselves. We did not accept free plans or test services hands-on, so what follows is what the companies publish and what independent reviewers report — pressure-tested against each other.

The short version: Aura and Norton LifeLock are the two most-cited #1 picks across major reviewers. Aura leads at CNET, TechRadar, and CyberInsider; LifeLock leads at Security.org, Tom's Guide, and PCMag. Coveron (by Nord Security) is the rising value pick. Prices below are current as of October 2026 — they change frequently, so verify before you buy.

1. Aura — Best overall

Aura is the #1 pick at CNET, TechRadar, CyberInsider, Money.com, and AllAboutCookies — the broadest reviewer consensus in the category. The core reason: it's the only major service with three-bureau credit monitoring on every plan, and independent head-to-head testing found it surfaces more dark-web exposures than LifeLock.

Pricing: Individual $9/mo billed annually or $12 month-to-month; Couple $17/mo annual ($20 monthly); Family $20/mo annual ($32 monthly). 60-day money-back guarantee on annual plans. Special intro pricing; may renew at a higher rate.

Key specs: 3 bureaus (Experian, Equifax, TransUnion) on all plans; dark web monitoring; up to $1M identity theft insurance per adult (up to $5M on Family); bundles antivirus, VPN, password manager, parental controls, and data-broker removal.

Strengths: three-bureau monitoring at every tier; fastest/most complete dark-web findings in independent tests; true all-in-one bundle with transparent pricing.

Drawbacks: the March 2026 breach (see below); no bare-bones cheap tier; reviewers rate its bundled VPN as mediocre.

On the March 2026 breach: attackers used a voice-phishing attack on an employee to access roughly 900,000 records — mostly names and emails from a legacy marketing database. No Social Security numbers, passwords, or financial data were taken, and Aura disclosed it within days. No major reviewer dropped Aura from its 2026 rankings over the incident, but it's fair to hold an identity-protection company to a higher standard here.

2. Norton LifeLock — Biggest insurance payout

LifeLock is #1 at Security.org (9.8/10), Tom's Guide, and PCMag (Editors' Choice). It's the most established name in the business, and it backs that with the industry's highest insurance and stolen-funds reimbursement: up to $3M on the top tier.

Pricing: Core Individual $12.49/mo; Advanced $19.99/mo; Total $34.99/mo (annual billing roughly 16% cheaper). Family plans from $35.99/mo. Prices rise after the first year.

Key specs: 2 bureaus on Core, 3 bureaus on Advanced and Total; dark web monitoring; up to $3M insurance ($1M stolen-funds reimbursement on Total); Norton 360 antivirus and VPN via bundles; 60-day money-back guarantee.

Strengths: highest insurance limits in the industry; deepest financial monitoring (investment accounts, phone-takeover and home-title monitoring on Total); US-based restoration specialists.

Drawbacks: confusing tier structure with 3-bureau monitoring gated behind pricier plans; significant price hikes after year one.

Note: Norton LifeLock is not currently accepting new affiliate partners, so there is no signup link here — our live pick, Coveron, is linked at the top of this page.

3. Coveron — Best value bundle

Coveron (by Nord Security, formerly NordProtect until May 2026) is the consensus rising pick — Gizmodo's #1 overall in October 2026 and top-three at Security.org and CyberInsider. It pairs $2M in identity theft insurance with the strongest cybersecurity bundle at this price.

Pricing: Scam Protection $5.99/mo, Identity Theft Protection $7.99/mo, Full Protection $11.99/mo (1-year terms); Full Family $29.99/mo. 30-day money-back guarantee.

Key specs: 1 bureau below Full Protection, 3 bureaus on Full; dark web monitoring; $2M identity theft insurance plus $100K home-title fraud and $100K cyber-extortion coverage; Full Protection bundles NordVPN, antivirus, and Incogni data removal.

Strengths: best price-to-coverage ratio — $2M insurance plus home-title cover from ~$6–7/mo; strongest security bundle via Nord Security; easy cancellation.

Drawbacks: not available to New York residents; no credit report below the top tier; renewal rates roughly double after promo terms; 30-day guarantee vs. 60-day rivals.

4. Identity Guard — Best AI-powered alerting

Identity Guard (an Aura sister company) earns its spot on the strength of its IBM Watson-powered risk engine, which Security.org praised for the fastest alerting in its tests. It's a monitoring-first service at a reasonable price.

Pricing: Value $8.99/mo ($7.50/mo annual); Total $19.99/mo; Ultra $29.99/mo. 60-day money-back on annual plans; no free trial.

Key specs: no bureaus on Value, 3 bureaus on Total/Ultra; dark web monitoring; $1M insurance on all plans; password manager and safe-browsing tools — but no VPN, antivirus, or data-broker removal at any tier.

Strengths: AI-driven risk scoring with fast alerts; cheap entry tier with $1M insurance included; deep Ultra-tier monitoring (criminal records, home title, USPS change-of-address).

Drawbacks: heavy feature-gating — no credit monitoring on Value, no VPN/antivirus/data removal anywhere; mixed support reviews.

5. IdentityIQ — Best for credit-focused buyers

IdentityIQ is the pick for buyers who care most about the credit side: FICO scores, score simulators and trackers, and synthetic-identity monitoring. Security.org ranks it best in class for credit protection.

Pricing: Basic $8.49/mo ($7.44/mo annual); Plus $11.49; Pro $21.49; Max $31.49. Family protection only on Max.

Key specs: 1 bureau daily on Basic/Plus, 3 bureaus on Pro/Max; dark web monitoring; up to $1M insurance; Bitdefender-powered antivirus and VPN available as add-ons; no credit lock.

Strengths: credit-centric toolset (FICO scores, simulator, synthetic-ID monitoring); lowest starting price among full-featured services; US-based restoration specialists.

Drawbacks: four confusing tiers with full features locked behind pricey Max; no advertised free trial or money-back guarantee; cancellation requires a phone call.

6. IDShield — Best hands-on restoration

IDShield's differentiator is unique: licensed private investigators (via Kroll) do the actual restoration work for you, not just phone coaching. Every plan includes every feature — only the bureau count differs.

Pricing: Individual 1-bureau $14.95/mo; Individual 3-bureau $19.95/mo; Family 1-bureau $29.95/mo; Family 3-bureau $34.95/mo. Monthly billing only — no annual discounts. 30-day money-back.

Key specs: 1 or 3 bureaus; dark web monitoring; $1M individual / $3M family insurance; VPN, password manager, and antivirus included; social-media and reputation monitoring.

Strengths: only service with licensed PIs handling recovery; no feature nickel-and-diming; transparent pricing that never increases.

Drawbacks: expensive month-to-month with zero annual or promo discounts; smaller brand with a weaker app ecosystem than Aura or LifeLock.

7. Experian IdentityWorks — Best free tier

IdentityWorks is the only service here with a genuinely free tier worth using: Experian credit monitoring, a FICO score, and dark-web scans for $0. The paid Premium tier is pricey for what you get, but the data comes straight from the bureau.

Pricing: Basic free forever; Premium $24.99/mo; Family $34.99/mo. No annual discount advertised.

Key specs: 3 bureaus on Premium; dark web monitoring; $1M insurance; no bundled extras (no VPN/antivirus/password manager); Experian credit lock.

Strengths: direct-from-the-bureau credit data with daily FICO scores; genuinely useful free tier; frequently bundled free by breached companies.

Drawbacks: most expensive per feature at $25–35/mo with no security bundle; difficult cancellation reported; slower dark-web alerts than Aura in head-to-head tests.

8. McAfee+ — Best security-bundle value

McAfee+ is really a security suite with identity protection attached: full McAfee antivirus on unlimited devices, VPN, and password manager from about $4.17/mo in year one. The identity features are heavily gated by tier, so read the fine print.

Pricing: annual billing only (first-year promo): Individual Premium $49.99/yr, Advanced $89.99/yr, Ultimate $199.99/yr; Family $69.99–$249.99/yr. Renewals jump substantially. 30-day money-back.

Key specs: no credit monitoring below Advanced; 1 bureau on Advanced, 3 bureaus on Ultimate; dark web monitoring; $1M insurance on Advanced, $2M on Ultimate (plus $25K ransomware coverage).

Strengths: best-value security bundle in the category; top-rated, user-friendly app; unique extras like Scam Detector and a Protection Score.

Drawbacks: identity features gated hard — no credit monitoring or insurance below Advanced; steep renewal hikes; no monthly billing.

9. Surfshark Alert — Cheapest breach monitoring

Surfshark Alert isn't a full identity protection service — there's no credit-bureau monitoring at all. What it is: the cheapest way to get breach/leak monitoring bundled with a VPN, antivirus, and data removal. Rank it for what it is, not what it isn't.

Pricing: bundled with Surfshark One ($2.79/mo on 2-year terms) or One+ ($4.49/mo on 2-year terms). 30-day money-back.

Key specs: no traditional credit-bureau monitoring; dark web/breach monitoring for unlimited emails; $1M insurance on One+ only; bundles VPN, antivirus, Incogni data removal, and private search; no family plan.

Strengths: cheapest path to breach monitoring + VPN + antivirus + data removal (~$4.50/mo); unlimited devices; works outside the US.

Drawbacks: no credit reports, scores, or credit lock — not a complete identity protection service; no family plan; insurance only on the top tier.

10. OmniWatch — Highest insurance limits

OmniWatch is the young challenger with the industry's biggest headline numbers: up to $8M in family insurance plus scam and ransomware reimbursement — the first major brand to offer the latter. Monitoring depth is thinner than the top picks, but the flat pricing (no renewal hikes) is refreshingly honest.

Pricing: Standard $7.99/mo annual; Elite $14.99/mo; Family $19.99/mo. Prices do not increase after year one. 30-day money-back on annual plans.

Key specs: 1 bureau (TransUnion) on Standard, 3 on Elite/Family; dark web monitoring; $2M/$4M/$8M insurance tiers; $50K–$200K scam/ransomware reimbursement; antivirus and VPN on higher tiers.

Strengths: industry-leading insurance limits plus unique scam/ransomware reimbursement; flat pricing with no renewal games; "make-it-right" refund pledge if experts can't resolve your case.

Drawbacks: monitoring gaps noted by reviewers; younger brand with less independent testing; middling user-review scores.

How we ranked them

We started from 2026 reviewer consensus — CNET, Security.org, TechRadar, Tom's Guide, PCMag, CyberInsider, Money.com, and Gizmodo — then scored each service on four things that actually matter to buyers: (1) monitoring depth (how many bureaus, dark web), (2) insurance limits, (3) honest pricing (what you pay after promos), and (4) bundled extras. One honest caveat from Clark.com, which deliberately ranks no paid services: you can get a lot of protection free with credit freezes at all three bureaus plus free monitoring from Credit Karma — paid services earn their keep on insurance, restoration help, and convenience, not on monitoring alone.

Prices change frequently — verify current pricing before you buy. Until a program approves this site and provides a valid tracking destination, product buttons remain visibly inactive, as you see above.
